Alissa Bridges started throwing in 2012 and celebrates the opportunity to create vessels that bring people together over a meal, across a bundle of garden treasures, or an offering of memorable gems. These hand thrown offerings are made on the wheel with love from mother earth to stoneware vessels showcasing nature's beauty while bringing humans together through meaningful connection and acts of love.
Let's talk about the process!
Clay, "mud", is constantly in a state of flux from the moment it is dry dirt to wet mud. It is worked into manageable clay and stretched through pulls and openings with water, wheel and hands. As is dries, it becomes "leather hard" so that I can add a bottom, carve details, add handles, and personalize for you; this also includes underglazed paintings! It then has to fully dry for bisque fire, continuing to shrink. Average shrinkage between wet and final glaze fire is about 10% to 14% in size. The drying and firing process must be done with TIME. This is when we release the pots to the universe and hope everything comes out in one state of PEACE and BEAUTY with functionality.
Throwing
After weighing and wedging the clay, we are ready to throw! YAY!
Trimming
This is done a "leather hard" to add feet to the pot and trim details.
Details
Hand carving details are added and special underglaze images.
Handles
Handles are personalized with different shapes and applications. This process takes lots of time to form the handle and carefully attach!
Glazing
There are several styles of glazing that I use. This process takes time to ensure the application is precise!
Hand Painting
Hand painting with layered effects and sometimes in combination with carvings is done!
"Lola" my kiln
Firing happens twice (before glazing and after glazing). This process takes about 24 hours each fire.
Two days per firing= 4 days in the kiln!
The Finished Vessel
The beautiful gift of mother nature! Earths form taken into a new shape and function!
Enjoy your one of a kind piece of artwork!
